As I’ve been meeting with nursing homes and assisted living communities during this COVID pandemic, my hat is off to the leaders who have stepped forward to guide their staff and residents to safe ground. I see them creatively resourcing PPE, collaborating with community health officials, communicating with families, and actively involved in training on safe practices.
But the one question I get over and over is, “I don’t know what to do for my residents with dementia!”
Even before COVID darkened our doors, this was a constant concern for senior communities – how best to train staff so residents living with dementia can receive more than just basic care and are able to experience meaningful life?
Consistent staff turnover makes dementia training an ever-needed event. The usual routine of putting staff in front of a computer for hours of outdated training videos doesn’t lead to engaged learning, true individualization of approach or staff job satisfaction.
Offering good memory care is complex! Every resident is unique and has their own needs and abilities. Leaders ask how they can improve their care and set their memory care community apart from their competitors.
In response to requests for memory care training that is engaging and innovative and easily accessible, I have developed the LEAP Memory Care Training Program.

I’m excited to be making LEAP Memory Care training available to senior care communities starting in September 2020.
The LEAP Memory Care Program is a complete training system to prepare you and your team to offer an innovative and quality experience for your residents affected by memory changes. LEAP provides an all-in-one packaged program with trainings and tools to give your team new techniques and confidence to offer meaningful care to your memory care residents.
And the first element of LEAP is LEADERSHIP. Other dementia care trainings are developed only for the direct care staff, seldom is leadership included in the trainings. But innovation and change start with the leaders! With an overview of the LEAP program, leaders will have an increased understanding of what the resident with dementia is experiencing and how to best support your teams to be successful.
